A day on the sand at New Brighton leaves its mark. Fine grains work into the armpits, the groin and between the pads, where they rub like sandpaper. A good wash and a thorough blow-dry get it all out. Check between the toes, especially on dogs with long hair around the feet.
Salt dries on the coat when a dog has been splashing in the shallows, and it makes hair feel crisp and tangle easily. Fresh-water rinsing straight after the walk is the simplest habit you can adopt. If you cannot manage a rinse, a damp towel wipe on the legs and belly helps.
The prom itself is busy and paved, so nails on dogs that spend a lot of time there tend to wear a little, but those that mostly walk on sand stay long. Overlong nails splay the toes and make beach running harder. Many owners book a quick nail clip between full grooms.
Wallasey Village and Central Park are greener, and spring grass seeds are a nuisance there. Seeds that lodge in the paws or ears can cause trouble, so check after every walk. Short-trimmed feet and tidy ear hair make seeds easier to spot and brush away.

- Check what the coat is like after a walk, looking at the ears, armpits and back legs for knots.
- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Wallasey and what happens if a dog becomes stressed.
- Brush a little each day after your usual walk around the New Brighton promenade, Central Park and Wallasey Beach to keep tangles from setting.

Good questions
Before you begin.
Can sand harm my dog's skin?
Fine sand left in the coat can irritate skin. Rinse and brush after beach days, and book a full bath if your dog keeps scratching.
Does salt water ruin a coat?
Repeated salt exposure can leave a coat dry and tangled. A fresh-water rinse afterwards helps a lot.
How can I spot grass seeds?
Look between the toes, inside the ears and around the eyes after each walk. See a vet if your dog is limping or shaking its head.
