Birkenhead Park is wooded and watery, and its lakes tempt retrievers and spaniels into a paddle. Silty water dries into the feathering on legs and chests, and by evening it can be a stiff mat. Rinse and towel a wet coat when you get home, then comb through the feathering before it sets.
Bidston Hill brings a different mess. Heather, bracken and gorse catch in long coats, and burrs lodge behind the ears and between the toes. A slicker brush and a fine comb after each visit stop small tangles becoming hard knots. Dogs with thick undercoats hold more debris than owners expect.
Along the Mersey front the wind blows a coat the wrong way, and spray leaves a light salt film. Curly and silky coats tangle most in those conditions, particularly at the collar line where the harness rubs. A well-fitted harness that does not chafe makes the neck easier to keep tidy.
In the terraced streets many dogs are small breeds that live indoors, so their coats stay clean but grow long around the face. Clear vision, tidy paws and short nails matter more than a dramatic clip. A regular full groom every six weeks or so suits many of the Shih Tzus and Yorkies you see on Borough Road.

- Check what the coat is like after a walk, looking at the ears, armpits and back legs for knots.
- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover Birkenhead and what happens if a dog becomes stressed.
- Brush a little each day after your usual walk around Birkenhead Park, the Mersey waterfront and Bidston Hill to keep tangles from setting.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I get park silt out of a dog's feathering?
Rinse it with lukewarm water, towel dry and comb gently once the coat is damp. A bath removes what is left.
Will heath burrs hurt my dog?
They can pull on skin, so remove them gently with your fingers or a comb. A groomer can cut a stubborn one out safely.
How often should a small terrace dog be groomed?
Many do well with a full groom every six to eight weeks and a quick tidy of the face in between.
