- Sankey Valley Park, Taylor Park and Sherdley Park
Sankey Valley Park follows a brook and a former canal, and the towpath turns to a slick of mud after rain. Dogs that walk it regularly come home with brown legs and bellies. A shower hose and an old towel at the back door are among the most useful pieces of grooming kit you can own.
Sherdley Park has wide fields where dogs run hard, and long grass picks up burrs and seeds. Spaniels and setters with feathering are most affected, and so are the soft areas under the tail. Check those areas by hand, because you may feel a seed before you see it.
Taylor Park is more formal, with flower beds and neat paths. Smaller dogs in neat clips are a common sight there, and Poodles and Schnauzers need regular visits to keep their lines. If a groom has been left too long, the coat will be harder to shape, and a shorter style may be the kind choice.
Terriers have a long history around here, and Lakeland and Border types still turn up on local walks. Wiry coats keep their texture best when the dead hair is hand stripped, not clipped. Ask a groomer if they offer it, because not everyone does.

- Check what the coat is like after a walk, looking at the ears, armpits and back legs for knots.
- Ask each groomer how they work, whether they cover St Helens and what happens if a dog becomes stressed.
- Brush a little each day after your usual walk around Sankey Valley Park, Taylor Park and Sherdley Park to keep tangles from setting.

Good questions
Before you begin.
What is the best way to clean a muddy dog?
Let the mud dry, brush it out, then wash with lukewarm water. For very muddy coats a bath and brush is easier than a rinse at home.
Are grass seeds dangerous?
They can work into skin, ears and paws. See a vet if your dog limps, shakes its head or licks one spot.
Do terriers need hand stripping?
Many wire coats look and feel best that way, but clipping is a common choice. It is a matter of coat and preference.
